About

Demand is engineered, not wished

The sourced, numerate playbook for writing, launching, and selling books the market actually wants.

The Author's Game is a publication for writers self-publishing their books — first-time authors, working indies, and authorpreneurs building a catalogue. It is written for the person in the middle of the decision, not for the platforms and services selling to them. Market validation, covers and metadata, royalty math, launch timelines, ARC campaigns: we turn the black box of Amazon, algorithms, and royalty tables into a clear, sourced system for selling books the market actually wants.

We are editorially independent and reader-first. Every figure is dated and traced to a primary document, we report the median rather than the flattering mean, and we name the base rate before we name the upside. No hype, no despair — just the arithmetic and what it means for your next decision.

What we cover

How we work

Independent and reader-first

The Author's Game is written for authors publishing their own books, not for the platforms and services selling to them. Our recommendations are editorially independent; our job is to make a complicated business legible — never to push a sale.

Sourced and tested

We read the primary documents — actual KDP terms, published royalty tables, live bestseller lists, named industry surveys — rather than trusting a screenshot. Every figure is dated and traced to its source, and we report medians rather than the means a handful of outliers drag upward.

Base-rate honest

Roughly nine in ten self-published titles sell fewer than a hundred lifetime copies. We say so, and we still show you the levers that move the number. Anti-hype and anti-despair in equal measure: no lottery sold as a plan, no counsel of doom either.

Frequently asked

What is The Author's Game?

The Author's Game is an independent publication covering self-publishing and indie authorship for writers publishing their own books — first-time authors, working indies, and authorpreneurs. We turn the black box of Amazon, algorithms, and royalty math into a clear, sourced system for selling books the market actually wants — demand engineered, not wished.

What does it cover?

The Author's Game covers market validation, book craft and completion, cover, title and description packaging, metadata and categories, pricing and royalties, email lists and reader magnets, reviews and ARC campaigns, launch strategy, advertising on Amazon, Meta and BookBub, discovery via the algorithm, BookTok and AI answer engines, series and backlist compounding, and rights and compliance. Alongside our reporting we publish in-depth guides and tested roundups of the tools and services our readers are weighing.

How do you source and check your advice?

We start from primary documents — platform terms, published royalty tables, live bestseller and category data, and named industry surveys — rather than from a guru's screenshot. Every figure carries a date and a source, we prefer medians to means, and we flag a viral success story as the outlier it is. Where a claim cannot be traced, we leave it out.

How often do you publish?

We publish new reporting and guides across our seven sections regularly, and The Demand Letter brings one sourced brief to your inbox each week. Guides are reviewed and refreshed as platform terms and royalty rules change.
