Amazon keeps the customer. When a reader buys your book on Amazon, the royalty lands in your account and the email address, purchase history, and future relationship land in Amazon's. Selling direct inverts that: **direct-to-reader platforms let an author retain 85–97% of the sale price** after fees, against Amazon KDP's effective 35–70% royalty bands, and every completed order delivers a buyer's email into your own list.

The margin difference is seductive, and it comes with one hard condition. A direct store generates zero organic discovery — Amazon's algorithm surfaces your book to millions of browsing readers; your storefront surfaces it to no one. As the [Written Word Media 2025 Indie Author Survey](https://www.writtenwordmedia.com/2025-indie-author-survey-results-insights-into-self-publishing-for-authors/) (n=1,346) shows, among authors earning $10,000 or more per month roughly half sell direct — but they sell direct *on top of* a built audience, not instead of one. Authors with an email list earn a median of roughly $300 per month versus $15 without — a 20× gap — and email converts direct-store visitors at 4–5.3%, against 0.7–1.5% for marketplace or social traffic.

This ranking covers five real platforms on fees, margin math, use-case fit, and honest weaknesses. The field splits into two categories: **storefronts and payment processors** (Payhip, Gumroad, Shopify, ThriveCart) and the **delivery infrastructure layer** (BookFunnel) that makes the storefronts actually work for digital files. Three warnings apply regardless of which platform you choose: never launch a direct store without an existing email list; never price direct below your Amazon listing (Amazon price-matching will force your KDP royalties down); and never sell an ebook direct while it is enrolled in KDP Select.
